School Travel Competitions

The Limerick Smarter Travel School Project supports, promotes and delivers a wide range of competitions throughout the year. A summary of these are provided below:

 

Limerick Travel Competitions

 

  • The Limerick Smarter Travel 'Big Travel Action Challenge' was launched in September 2014 and offers communities across the study area the opportunity to win prizes and further travel action support from a prize fund of €15,000. Further details are available from the communities page
  • In support of the #Safetoschool initiative in the UK, the Limerick Smarter Travel School Project operates a  'Travel Selfie' competition via online social media. Members of the school community are invited to highlight their mode of choice by wearing feet or cycle glasses. Examples from the 2014 competition are available from our Flickr Page
  • The school project will be launching our inaugural 'Design a bus stop of the future' competition in 2015. This competition is run in partnership with Bus Eireann where the winning entries will be entitled to a goodie bag and a free family ticket to any destination in Ireland. This competition will be run in tandem with the 'Know your Bus Route' initiative.
  • Limerick 'School Car-Free Day' will take place on May 13th 2015. As part of this event schools are invited to participate in an art competition where shortlisted entries will be exhibited in city -hall for the month of  June. Further details are available from our 'School Car-Free Day' section.
  • The Limerick Smarter  Travel 'Miniature Bike' competition is run in June of each year where schools are invited to create their own miniature bicycle out of recycled material. This competition is run in partnership with the Environmental Section of Limerick City Council.
  • The Limerick Smarter Travel Golden Bike Award is the award given to the school with the highest number of cyclists during bike week.

 

Individual School Competitions

 

Several competitions are run in schools as part of their travel action plan. These vary from school to school and depend on the needs of the school.  Students are encouraged to think of their own competitions and realise them with the support of their travel officer.  If you would like some ideas and guidance for school travel competitions, please do not hesitate to get in contact us using the details provided.

 

Nationwide Travel Competitions

 

  • The RSA run a 'leading light' award which aims to recognise and celebrate road of committed volunteers, schools, businesses and organisations. The closing date for application is October  27th 2014. Further details on this are available here 
  • The RSA also coordinate the annual Seatbelt Sheriff and Hi-Glo Silver competition for 1st/2nd class students.Further details on this national competition are available here
  • An Taisce in partnership with the Department of Transport and the National Transport Authority run the Green-Schools Travel Competition in  March of each year. This competition is designed to identify and celebrate Irelands best travel schools. In 2014, St. Patricks  GNS, Dublin Rd, Limerick City were awarded the title of  'Top Walking School of the Year' (in the Awarded category). Further details are available here.
